Information

Mars – ‘fourth rock from the Sun’ is one of the most intriguing of the planets in our solar system – not to mention one of the closest possible abodes for life 'out there'.

Ever since early astronomers thought that they had seen 'canals' on Mars, theories pertaining to life on the planet have persisted. Even though we now know that there is no planet-wide Martian civilisation, we cling on to the idea that there may be some form of life on (or within) 'the red planet'.
We will look at Mars as revealed by recent space probes and in particular the rover vehicles, Curiosity and Perseverance, which show us detailed images of the surface of Mars – the like of which have never been seen before.
PLEASE NOTE THIS IS A LIVE IN PERSON PRODUCTION HELD IN OUR FRIARAGE THEATRE.

If you require wheelchair access seating, then please contact the Box Office as we allocate a specific seating area for this.

About the Lecturer

Our Astronomy Talks will be brought to you by Dr Fred Stevenson. Dr Stevenson obtained a degree in Physics with Astrophysics from the University of Leicester in 1980 followed by a PhD in Cosmology from Durham University in 1986.
After further research he has spent the past twenty five years teaching adult education classes in astronomy, physics and mathematics at a variety of venues throughout Northumberland, County Durham and North Yorkshire.
He has organized and taught numerous weekend courses in astronomy based in the Kielder forest park and other venues in the North Pennines. Fred is passionate about talking to the public about astronomy and has given numerous talks to astro societies and other groups.
When he is not teaching Fred can be found wandering the moors and fells of the North of England and also in our Theatre bringing you these very exciting talks.
